I agree with what William Gibson is saying, but it is not only "today" that people take things without credit. It has happened throughout history and art is definitely part of the culture where it has almost blatantly taken from other cultures and claimed it was the artist's genius. The internet has made it more challenging because information on almost anything is available immediately where people provide information without saying where it had come from or inaccurate information that gets quickly spread.
As an artist, I know that I have seen other artist's ideas and incorporated them into my stuff. Sometimes I do not know who made it though, because I saw it on the internet or somewhere without a name or anything. I have never stolen a person's entire idea though, and do not plan to. If I did not make it, I can not take credit for it. I would hope that other people would do the same thing, but in art it is a bit of a gray area - some artists have made a name for themselves by blantantly copying what other artists have done.
