Blog # 4

I agree with what William Gibson and his notions on stolen artisic ideas in todays society. But i also believe that its not just today. Yes, the way people take credit for others work now a days is much more advanced and has become easy for the ordinary person, but the idea had to come from sometime before us.
With the internet and other tech sources getting ideas from another has become somthing of the ordinary, happening on a daily basis. I think to a certain extent viewing other artist's work and gaining a more cultured knowledge on different types of artwork is nessecary to become a better artist. Although delibratly taking someone elses work with giving them credit is something that happens way too often.

I agree to the extent of "appropiation" and "borrowing" but saying that remixing is the nature of the digital age is very blunt. Its as if Gibson is saying that the digital only exists to copy. Granted it can, but it can do more, as the digital allows us to elaborate on what we see and to improve what exists far easier and faster than ever before.
As an artist, i am somewhat torn by the idea. Art is the creation of images and with the advent of the digital image, any image can be claimed and copied with a google search and a right-click. So in that visual aspect, i have to agree, especially with programs such as photoshop, whose very nature is to edit and change images. Because of that, anyone can take anything and make it their own.

Kate is totally right, getting ideas from another artist is fine but TAKING THEIR WORK IS NOT. I study many artist, i have to to be a good painter some day. i look at tons of paintings getting ideas of how to use color, or composition. if i had nothing to study because it would be considered stealing, i wouldnt be the same person i am today. an artist can study a piece by recreating it but they have to say "origional by Van Gogh" or something to that extent.
