John Lennon, The Modern Day Jesus Christ

So, like Bethany, I picked a Beatles song. I actually wrote this blog a year ago for a scholarship. The topic was to write about which rock star I would like to meet and I wrote about how I would like to meet John Lennon because it would be like meeting Jesus Christ, not that I'm religious anymore. After reading it again, I probably over analysed the song but I couldn't help but make some general comparisons to the Bible. After all, I did go to Catholic school for eight years. Anyway, here's my blog.

Have you ever heard a song so many times but never really listen to the lyrics? And after realizing what the lyrics mean, you all of a sudden have a higher appreciation for it? Well, one of those songs for me is "The Ballad of John and Yoko" by The Beatles. The chorus goes, "Christ. You know it ain't easy. You know how hard it can be. The way things are going, they're going to crucify me." At first, I though he just says "Christ" as in to swear, but then I realized it's like he's referring to Christ, like John Lennon is speaking to Him, comparing himself to Jesus Christ. I know the guy wasn't religious, but think about it. Lennon has always compared himself to the Almighty. Remember when he said, "The Beatles are more famous than Jesus."? Both John and Jesus were inspiring, moral leaders trying to make the world a better place. Jesus started a religion and John started a philosophy. In the song, he's comparing his relationship with Yoko Ono to Jesus' relationship with Mary Madalene. Everyone hates Yoko Ono just as everyone hated Mary Madalene as said in the Bible. The Disciples didn't like taking orders from Mary as did the Beatles didn't like taking orders from Yoko. John Lennon is telling Jesus Christ, "YOU know it ain't easy. YOU know how hard it can be. The way things are going, they're going to crucify ME!" And like Jesus Christ, John Lennon was crucified. I would love to meet John Lennon because it would be like meeting Jesus Christ. It would be very impowering and emotional. I would have so many questions to ask him and so many ideas to talk about. This song puts a picture in my head of John and Jesus in heaven, sitting at a bar, drinking a beer, and arguing over who's more famous.
Here's the song
Standing in the dock at Southampton,
Trying to get to Holland or France.
The man in the mac said, "You've got to go back".
You know they didn't even give us a chance.
Christ you know it ain't easy,
You know how hard it can be.
The way things are going
They're gonna crucify me.
Finally made the plane into Paris,
Honey mooning down by the Seine.
Peter Brown called to say,
"You can make it O.K.,
You can get married in Gibraltar, near Spain".
Christ you know it ain't easy,
You know how hard it can be.
The way things are going
They're gonna crucify me.
Drove from Paris to the Amsterdam Hilton,
Talking in our beds for a week.
The newspaper said, "Say what you doing in bed?"
I said, "We're only trying to get us some peace".
Christ you know it ain't easy,
You know how hard it can be.
The way things are going
They're gonna crucify me.
Saving up your money for a rainy day,
Giving all your clothes to charity.
Last night the wife said,"Oh boy, when you're dead
You don't take nothing with you
But your soul - think!"
Made a lightning trip to Vienna,
eating chocolate cake in a bag.
The newspaper said, "She's gone to his head,
They look just like two gurus in drag".
Christ you know it ain't easy,
You know how hard it can be.
The way things are going
They're gonna crucify me.
Caught the early plane back to London.
Fifty acorns tied in a sack.
The men from the press said, "We wish you success,
It's good to have the both of you back".
Christ you know it ain't easy,
You know how hard it can be.
The way things are going
They're gonna crucify me.
The way things are going
They're gonna crucify me.
