What Happens When You Write?

Your first topic taken from "What Happens When People Write?"
Think about what happens when you sit down to write. Do you have one particular pen that you like to use, or do you compose on your computer? Where do you like to write? Do you have any special rituals that you go through before settling into your task? Briefly describe the process you go through from the time you make the decision to put an idea in writing (or are given an assignment) to the time you submit final copy. Is the process roughly the same for all the different types of writing that you do? Explain for us, please.

When I write a paper for an assignment, I usually just follow the same old routine. Sit down somewhere quiet and comfortable, set up laptop in my lap, and brainstorm ideas. Sometimes I like to write down ideas onto paper but if I am feeling lazy, I'll just stick to my computer. I always take one break when writing a paper. Usually I'll take the break after I wrote half the paper. So it's kind of like "HALF-TIME" like in sports. After I finish the paper, I make sure to go back and re-read what I wrote. And if I see errors, I fix them and make the words fit well together. This writing process is same for any paper that I write. I don't have different ways of writing a paper just because I'm comfortable with this way of writing.

It usually takes me a long time to come up with an idea; especially on topics that I'm not interested. I used to wirte down things on paper before getting started on the computer because it helps brainstorming. I do like the feeling of handwriting because I don't like how it seems so mechanic to type my thoughts down on a computer. Then I started to have too much homework to handle; so I skipped the handwriting process. The best place to write papers for me is the library. I get distracted easily so I need to be in somewhere quiet that nothing could take my attention away from the paper. My thoughts usually come up all at once especially at the night before the assignment is due. It's probably because I force myself so hard to get inspired. It's difficult for me to make the final decision, to actaully sit down and write my paper until the last minute because I'm not good at organizing my thoughts. When I finally make the decision, I finish the paper all at once so I don't have any second thoughts that would take me a long time to reorganize my words. Also, I'm a observative person; that's why I have so many ideas but not knowing which one to start with. I think it's easy for me to write; but it takes a while to make a decision on what to write about.

When I write I always have to use my computer. I hate writing on paper with a pen or a pencil. I just think it's not my thing. I type so much more faster and I feel like I can express myself better when I use a computer. I usually like sitting on my bed with my computer on my lap, all comfortable and relaxed. I tend to procrastinate, which I know is a very bad habit. However, it works for me. When I try to write things or work on my assignment before hand I just can't concentrate. I get easily distracted and it takes me a longer time to start and finish. I guess I do better the last minute. I get my act together and I work a lot faster. I know this is a bad habit which I am going to have to work on so I won't be too stressed out with too much work to do. I also have other people read my essays on the computer before turning it in, so I can make corrections easily. I know if I work ahead of time I'll have enough time to go to the SRC and get my paper evaluated. This will probably help me a lot. But, briefly that's how I usually write and work for most of my assignments.

Writing is pretty spontaneous for me once I sit down to actually do it. I do not have any preferences, but I tend to write with a pencil or pen and paper since it is usually the thing that is on hand. I am probably used to it since I had to write so many papers in-class with no computer until later. Occasionally I do make a brainstorm for myself to organize my thoughts. After that, I just sit down and write it. While I am writing, I just put down the ideas I had right after I read the prompt or shortly after, embellishing with ideas that come into my head while I am writing. After it is written, I generally do not look too much at it. I do this for all the things I write.

When someone sits down to write, a lot of ideas are flowing through their mind. Some are good, perfect or totally off topic. It is the persons choice as to which one they pick. Most of the time they pick the good ones but sometimes the proffesor get the person that pick the totally off topic idea. When i write i like to write it by hand, with a blue pen on lined paper, using both sides. With technology now a days i dont need to write i out but i wish the proffesors would let me hand that in as my first draft. I have trouble getting out the right word if i have to look for the right key, but if i spell something wrong its nice to use the computer. When i write a rough draft i put the main ideas of the paper into it, then wait for feedback of my peers and proffesor to add more. If i have feedback this process is the same for all papers.
